Which is the best OS for my current situation.?
Hi there
I am starting Uni next year and I’ve just bought a new 2011 13″ Macbook Pro Intel Core i5 2.3GHz CPU 4GB RAM 320GB HDD
What I basically want to is to be able to simply open up my laptop an start typing relatively quickly. No mess. No fuss.
Which Operating System will best allow me to do this (Other than OSX, I personally do not like Snow Leopard)? And is it possible to install a SSD in one of these?
I’m mainly looking for speed.
Any information would be greatly appreciated.
It really depends on which one you prefer. From a cold boot many of the Linux distributions are faster to start than Windows 7. By the time you’re at Uni Windows 8 could well be out, and Microsoft are making a big noise about how it’s going to be incredibly fast to boot. But then they often make promises that fall flat.
All modern OSes support sleep mode for laptops, so you can just close the lid to switch it into power-saving mode and then open it again to instantly carry on where you left off. It really comes down to which OS you prefer most.
You can drop in an SSD as a straight replacement for an HDD, assuming you can get to the hard drive enclosure. Most laptops have an access panel on the bottom but Apple are a law unto themselves and have a reputation for making it hard to replace bits.
I’m curious why anyone would buy a Macbook if they hate OSX. There’s not much reason for paying the extra money for an Apple if you don’t want OSX.
