wd external hdd problems

My father is to buy a high-end PC (2.66 Quad Core, 4 GB RAM, 4870) and implementation plan some games like modern orange box, mass effect, perhaps Dragon Age when it comes out. The only problem my father is that I do not work "slow computer with my game," so that I install them directly on our internal hard drive. But let me install any disc drive, except that certain. I have a Western Digital My Passport external hard drive and my father has a WD My Book. Both were acquired in the last 6 months. Sure, the My Passport can Indigo Prophecy run fine, but I did not know how to handle this situation is nothing more powerful. Do any of these two external hard drives to run the games modern without problems or should I buy an internal hard drive instead?
Any average external drive play games very well, that should not be a problem. The only small problem I had with appearances is closed when idle (not mine atleast) so if you play something and then break you need to turn back back before it works. But this is not a problem.
