hdd throughput

If I had to invest in an external hard disk case, we must do to USB 2.0 or FireWire 400? Who is the best and why?
USB 2.0 is 480mbps is faster than FireWire 400 (400 Mbps only). But I learned that 480Mbps USB 2.0 's is only a maximum burst, while the 400 Mbit / S Firewire is compatible with thoughput rate, which leads me to believe that the Firewire 400 might actually be better (faster in total) to external storage. Can you other comments if you can boot from Firewire? I know it's possible with USB 2.0. And maybe if you have a link for a good external case you used. Thanks
Remember Me heard of external SATA or eSATA? It seems that the way forward. Here's an article http://www.velocityreviews.com/reviews/Thermaltake_Muse_eSATA/1/
