When all is right with the world, you turn on your PC and within minutes you're ready to go to work. You probably do not notice any magic has to happen with the operating system. Wait a bit for the desktop and can start the computer.

One of the things that happen without your knowledge, is that the system of checks so that called the boot sector on the hard disk. This is a physical place where the information needed to encode magnetic charge for Windows so you can use.

But sometimes something goes wrong and the boot is compromised. It can be caused by a viral infection. Or it could be just one physical degradation aging hard drive. This happened last year, without any warning.

The result is that when you turn on the computer, nothing happens. All we see is a blank screen or gray screen called the Black Death (BSOD).

But all is not lost. If you know what to do, you can recover from this tragedy apparent.

First, turn off the computer. Wait a minute or two before the light again. Check your owner's manual to see what key is set to install mode. Better yet, watch it now and if you write it down if needed.

TIP: Most computers use the delete key or F2. When the computer starts normally, blinking General message that prompts you to press this button to access the settings. Look for the next time you start.

Now, turn on the computer and at the same time, press to enter setup mode. It may be difficult to find the right time because it probably will not see anything on the screen. If you hit exactly the right time, you will see a screen full of configuration options.

If you still have the BSOD, turn off the machine and try again.

Exactly what you see depends on where your particular computer. Watch carefully until you find the section of the installation instructions indicating where to start.

They will be placed on the hard drive (as that is where you boot from). Change this option to boot from the CD. Click Save, then leave. Insert a bootable CD Windows on the CD and turn off the machine.

Turn on your computer and you should be able to access your office and return to work.

WARNING: What I mean with a Windows boot CD is not something that came with your computer. It's probably a re-install CD to reinstall Windows and get your machine to its configuration factory.

There most disaster recovery services and software products backup in the market that can help you create the CD boot. Two of the most popular are the true image of a company named Acronis Shadowprotect and a company called StorageCraft.

I hope you never see the BSOD. And I hope to prepare in advance anyway.
