On December 26, 2004, the Asian tsunami struck the coastal regions of southern Asia. Was the result of the second and longest undersea earthquake ever recorded, and has since been designated as the single worst tsunami in history.
The earthquake that generated this tsunami had a magnitude of 9.3 on the Richter scale lasted between 500 and 600 seconds. The wave caused by the earthquake caused extensive damage to parts of Indonesia, Sri Lanka, India and Thailand, with peaks reaching a maximum height 100 feet.
The damage that resulted from this tsunami has been extended. The social impact of this tsunami was also important. Tourism in the region has been canceled: make Travelers no longer wanted to visit the coasts of Southeast Asia. Where local families devastated, and many have lost their source of income and in some cases in which families whole dried completely.
There was a huge economic impact following the tsunami. Local infrastructure, including roads, utilities and supplies food that totally destroyed or seriously damaged that require much-needed repairs and costly. The coastal fishing communities have lost workers and such as boats, traps and other devices. It is estimated that 66% of the fishing fleet has been destroyed. Navigation through the Strait of Malacca has been affected by changes in depth drifting buoys, sea and the removal or movement of ancient shipwrecks. The salt water contaminated local supplies of fresh water and agricultural land in some cases, making it useless for what could become many years. Seven billion dollars in financial aid is pumped into the region through the International community. Even now, tourism has begun to return to the region.
To say that something as simple as a very big wave can cause damage of such magnitude is beyond than many people can begin to imagine.
