hdd external 500gb
If I bought a 500GB External HDD How many GB would be available to me to use?
I’m just curious because my computer only came with a 160GB HDD but when I look it says there are only 135GB Available. Same thing with my 16GB Ipod Touch, only 14.8 GB available. so yeah, anyone know how many GB I would actually get to use? and if there is a website or anything that allows you to figure out this for different amounts?
Manufacturers use a Gigabyte as 1 000 000 000 bytes. Windows considers a gigabyte as 1024 megabytes and a megabyte as 1024 KBytes, and a kilobyte = 1024 bytes, so a gigabyte in windows will be 1024*1024*1024 = 1073741824 bytes
500 GB = 500 000 000 000 bytes as reported by manufacturer in windows will be
(500 000 000 000 / 1073741824 ) =
465.GB
