XP Backup question …?

I try to save files and programs, etc. on my laptop with XP native XP Backup or Restore Wizard, I'm trying to save on the DVD with the laptop unit D, but damn wizard leaves me no backup / save in that unit. Also connected to two different external DVD + / – discs (letters F) (USB, the other 1394) and obtained the same result. The wizard is only allowing me I save it to disk (memory stick). I have not got an external hard drive or USB flash drive, high capacity … I simply save it to DVD. Am I missing something? What I'm doing wrong?
